Bareminerals BarePRO Foundation Review

For the past couple of years, I’ve been a loyal cushion compact gal. I loved how low maintenance it was to reapply throughout the day and the natural dewy finish was perfect for me.

Lately though, I noticed my needs changed. I wanted more coverage to conceal my sun spots and blemishes. I was getting older and my dark circles became darker. I needed more support to pull off that vibrant, glowing-from-within skin. I also wasn’t a fan of the dewy finish anymore – I craved a matte.

I begrudgingly made a trip to my nearest Ulta Beauty store, bidding farewell to my cushion compacts.

Lo and behold, my new discovery – Bareminerals BarePRO Performance Wear Liquid Foundation. I got the shade in Golden Ivory 08, and I have been LOVING it.

The Bareminerals website claims this foundation will “redefin[e] what long wear means. The skin-loving, high-performance formula blurs pores and imperfections while improving your skin’s condition, all with a soft-focus natural matte finish. With up to 24-hour wear in a range of 30 true-to-you shades, it works and plays as hard as you do. Just one pump delivers lightweight, oil-free, photo-friendly full-coverage.”

I haven’t tested the 24-hour long wear claim because this girl doesn’t have time to allow foundation sit on her face for that long. I did try the foundation (without face primer) for eight hours though, and it definitely lived up to the long wear. My T-zone got a little oily, but with a little pressed powder, it was all good.

I also wanted to test out was the claim that the “formula blurs pores and imperfections…all with a soft-focus natural matte finish.” The watery consistency of the foundation made me hesitant. Was this really going to cover all the blemishes on my face?

After the first application, I did see some blemishes and sun spots peeking through. For daytime, one layer of foundation would suffice to cover my imperfections. For nighttime, however, I did apply another thin layer of foundation to my cheeks, my nose, and the area around my mouth. The coverage is better with a second layer. It’s definitely a buildable foundation. Kudos on that!

I also love how the two layers didn’t leave my skin looking cakey. Another big plus. Instead I was left with a natural yet finish, like I literally woke up with really healthy, glowy skin.

I also bought the Bareminerals Luxe Performance brush and bareSkin PERFECTING VEIL pressed powder as well.

The brush is dense and compact, perfect for a foundation brush. It’s not symmetrical; one side has tapered fibers growing on an angle while the other side has bristles of all equal length. According to the Bareminerals, they claim that “its dense, tapered fibers mimic the shape of your fingertips to provide smooth, flawless coverage, while the compact head size allows for fast and easy blending around hard-to-reach areas like the nose and eyes.” It definitely lives up to that claim and does a wonderful job blending the foundation out. I do find myself using the tapered side more to blend out my foundation.

The pressed powder is great as well, though I think the Ulta makeup artist recommended me a shade too dark. I noticed I have to be more conservative with the amount of finishing powder I use, because if I used too much, the powder would start emphasizing any wrinkles or creases on my face. It’s not my HG finishing powder.

For that reason, I think I’ll be reaching more often for Laura Mercier’s finely milled translucent powder.

And that concludes my review of Bareminerals’ foundation, brush, and pressed powder. Have you guys tried out Bareminerals new line before? If not, what foundations are you loving right now as we go into the chilly, wintery seasons of 2017?

Xoxo,
Alice

Fall Burgundy Makeup Tutorial

Fall is officially upon us! I am so ready for the warm sweaters, pumpkin spice lattes, and fun holidays that are coming up. Know what else? 😉 An extra reason to sport a darker makeup look.

I used mostly the Modern Renaissance palette from Anastasia Beverly Hills. I know the palette has been around for awhile now, but I’ve been so inspired by their red shades.

Here’s my version of that. I wanted to go for a darker red, burgundy makeup look:

still feeling peachy.

A new addition to my makeup collection.

I’m still exploring it, but wow – the moment you open the palette, the peach smell just hits you instantly. It’s very, very pleasant. 😉

Because I have warm-toned skin, I have a feeling I’ll be getting very good use out of this palette. I’ve been a big fan of warmer shades like corals, peaches, apricots, browns, etc.

What’s your favorite palette? ❤

Just Peachy | makeup tutorial

I’ve been seeing (and absolutely loving!) the faux freckles trend on Youtube & Instagram. There is something so endearing about freckles – it gives off a very “Anne from Green Gables” vibe that’s very youthful, fresh, and playful.

I also applied my blush differently for this tutorial. Instead of applying the blush just on the apple of my cheeks, I also applied it on my nose bridge as well. As a result, it looks more like you just ran a mile and your face is flushed. Kind of like Vanellope from the movie Wreck It Ralph.

Anyway, enough of me talking (or writing, haha). Here’s the video, I hope you enjoy:

Current Foundation and Eyebrow Routine

Hello again! Here’s my current foundation and eyebrow routine. 🙂

For face, I’m absolutely in love with Cushion Compacts. First off, it’s low maintenance – your gal here doesn’t like to stress about whether her makeup is looking alright, not streaking, etc. They’re lightweight (I love how it doesn’t feel cakey). I can reapply it throughout the day with the cushion instead of worrying about carrying extra brushes or Beauty Blenders with me. While evening out your skin tone, it also looks natural on the skin, which I’m a total fan of.

As for brows, I’ve kept the same brow routine for years – applying Anastasia Beverly Hill’s duo brow powder with an angled brush. Then I brush the brow hairs with a spoolie to get rid of any excess product. The natural, soft look really pulls me in.

Without any further adieu, here’s the video:

Lilac Lips Monolid Makeup

I’ve been so in love with a purple lippy. Usually I go for the a nude shade, but I’ve been noticing that as I get older, I’m starting to feel more experimental about my lip shades. This look has been my go-to look when I go out for a fun night out with the fiance or friends.

What’s your favorite lip shades you love to rock on a night out? 😉

Soft Nude Makeup Tutorial

I have been absolutely obsessed with nude/beige tones lately. Warm golds and browns have always been my go to for makeup – it’s so easy to dress up when you’re going out for a fancy event; it’s also really easy to wear out to a low key outing to your nearest grocery market, the movies, etc.

I wanted a soft, nude look. Hence, “Soft Nude.”

Just Do It.

Random thought/rant of the day:

I love, love Nike’s slogan: Just Do It.

I’m realizing that when it comes to developing your artistry and creativity, you can’t always wait around until that ‘spark’ lights up. You can’t wait for the motivation to kick in to start the work. I tried working like that for a year (perhaps more? lol). I would wait for weeks at a time to push me into motion. In the meantime, the thoughts in my head would swirl and scramble around, causing anxiety in me….because I knew, in my deepest core, that I wasn’t creating any (good or bad) results for myself when I truly wanted to do the work. Then I’d feel guilty and mope around. It wasn’t a very proactive process; instead, it was masochistic and extremely unproductive. I felt that if I wanted to start anything, it had to be all or nothing and PERFECT. Because it it wasn’t, then all the work and results must mean nothing….right? Not.

Whether it’s good or bad, you gotta go in there and Just Do It. Work isn’t glamorous, especially when you’re creating your own startup. You’ll wake up exhausted, need that extra shot of espresso in your coffee, be cursing at yourself in front of your laptop while you force yourself to do something. I’ve had days like that. Funny thing is, at the end of the day when I lay down to go to sleep, I end up feeling satisfied.

It’s comforting to know that I made some progress, and that tomorrow, I’ll be able to fix it up even more and make it better. And that’s how you improve in your craft – you force yourself to do something (anything!). Afterwards, you hone in on it and make it even better. The more you repeat the process, eventually it becomes easier and more efficient. And you’re on your way to success. ❤

so yeah. ending the rant right here. Let’s Do It, guys. Let’s all hustle to make our dreams come true.

toodles,

-A

Holy Grail: C.O. Bigelow’s Rose Salve

could write an ode to my favorite, HOLY GRAIL lip balm: C.O. BIGELOW APOTHECARIES ROSE SALVE. I bought my first one a couple of years ago, and since then I haven’t gone back. Here are a couple of reasons why this is my holy grail lip balm:

SMELL THE ROSES.
Once you twist open the lid, the smell of roses just hits your senses. It’s not overpowering which is great for anyone who has a sensitive nose (like me!) but the fragrance is just… heavenly. It’s faint yet pleasantly lingers.

MOISTURIZING.
I have terribly dry lips – they’re chapped, dry, flaky, and plain painful at times. Compared to all the other lip balms that I’ve used, nothing locks in moisture longer than this rose salve. Additionally, the product absorbs into my lips quickly; within a couple of minutes, I already feel a dramatic difference.

A MEDLEY OF USES.
Not only do I use it on my lips, I love to generous amounts to my cuticles, hands, elbows, or any other areas that needs some extra Tender Love & Care. It’s like a lip balm + lotion hybrid. 😉

IT’S RELIABLE.
I’ve used Burt’s Bees, Chapstick, EOS, etc. and I always come back to this Rose Salve. Burt’s Bees and EOS lip balms both created an allergic reaction for me and it got worse the more often I applied it. There were rashes and blisters that would appear on my lips which were very alarming. I immediately reverted back to using the rose salve. After a couple of days, the rashes and blisters slowly faded.

LASTS FOR YEARS.
I still use the same rose salve that I bought two years ago. And it’s just barely hit pan.

What’s your favorite lip balm? 😉

cheers,
alice

Allo! I’ve moved!

Wheeee, I’m now on WordPress! Previously I was on alicedotkay.com… but I wasn’t writing as much and the monthly fee to maintain a custom domain wasn’t feasible to me. But now I’m here, starting from scratch and feeling absolutely renewed. 🙂

I hope to write more often – perhaps every week? #fingerscrossed

Honestly, I do feel hesitant about putting all my thoughts online. But I do notice that when I intentionally censor myself, I don’t end up getting all my thoughts out of my head onto paper. And then, alas, those thoughts usually never end up on the blog; instead, they end up lazing about in head.

So this is my little promise to myself; I’m announcing it online, here, so that I can do something good with my blog. 🙂

toodles,
